10 Valuable Life Lessons from Golf - NCBA Bank

Kenya is renowned for its athletic prowess, particularly in running, with stars like Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon capturing global attention.

However, golf has traditionally been overshadowed by more popular sports such as football. This perception is changing, thanks to the inspiring journey of Michael Karanga, who has emerged from humble beginnings as a matatu tout to become one of Kenya’s top amateur golfers.

Michael Karanga was born on January 24, 1995, in Ndumberi, Kiambu County. Growing up, Michael watched his grandfather play and was inspired to take up the sport.

“I would go with him to the golf-course and learn from him,” Michael says. He started playing golf when he was just 12 years old. His grandfather would let him hit some balls, and soon, Michael discovered he had a talent for it.

At first, there weren’t many junior competitions in Kenya, but in 2014, Captain Njogu invited him to join Kiambu Golf Club. This was where Michael began competing in junior tournaments.

In 2023, Karanga dominated the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship series, winning 13 out of the 18 events he participated in and earning the title of Golfer of the Year.

His impressive performance included setting new course records and accumulating over Sh1.5 million in prize money throughout the series.

His success has not only established him as a leading figure in Kenyan-golf but also positioned him among the top amateur golfers globally, ranking below 100 out of approximately 70,000 players.

Karanga’s story is significant because it challenges the traditional view of golf as an elite sport reserved for the wealthy. Golf is accessible to everyone, regardless of background.

Golf teaches several valuable lessons that can be applied beyond the course:

1) Don’t dwell on mistakes.

Bad shots are opportunities to learn and improve. Every shot is a chance for redemption. This applies to all aspects of life, especially work and school. Everyone makes mistakes, but there’s always a chance to recover.

2) Focus on the big picture

Golf is a series of shots with a specific goal. Similarly, in life, you need a clear goal and a plan to achieve it.

3) Discipline and patience.

Success in golf requires consistent practice and patience, qualities that are essential in all areas of life.

4) Resilience

Overcoming challenges on the course mirrors life’s obstacles; golfers learn to bounce back from setbacks.

5) Focus and strategy

Golf demands concentration and strategic thinking, skills that are beneficial in personal and professional environments.

6) Integrity

The game promotes honesty and integrity, as players are responsible for their own scores and conduct.

7) Never give up

8) Silence is golden

It’s easy to abandon our goals, no matter how big or small. Whether we’re learning a new skill or pursuing higher education, a single setback can derail our progress. Unless the habit is harmful, giving up is often the easiest option. Golf teaches athletes not to give up, even in the face of repeated failures.

While many sports thrive in a noisy environment, the power of silence is often underestimated. Golfers appreciate the quiet, which helps them concentrate on their technique. This teaches us that silence can be a valuable tool for personal and professional growth.

9) Humility is important

Many of the best golfers are very humble. They know that other golfers are also good, and they can lose at any time. They are always polite to other golfers. When you are humble, you can learn from others and get better.

10) Hard work is more important than luck.

Luck is not very important in golf. You need to work hard to be a good golfer. You become luckier by working harder. This is true for everything in life. The more you practice, the luckier you will be.

Karanga’s journey exemplifies how golf can serve as a platform for personal growth and community engagement. His achievements not only elevate his status but also inspire a new generation of golfers in Kenya, proving that with hard work and dedication, anyone can succeed in this beautiful game.

This grassroots movement is further strengthened by the NCBA Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series, which plays a crucial role in the development of amateur golf in Kenya, supported by significant sponsorship from NCBA Bank.

In 2024, NCBA Bank pledged Sh18 million to enhance the KAGC series and the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) events. This commitment not only supports current amateur players but also invests in future generations of golfers, reinforcing its status as a cornerstone of Kenyan amateur golf.

Next time you see a golf ball on the course or a tournament in your area, remember that it represents more than just a game.
